On April 13, we had a field trip to the Idaho Forest Group (IFG) mill in Chilco Idaho. Most took a tour of the mill and many participated in a comparison scale using Scribner short log scale on a group of 75 logs. The logs included mix of typical inland western North American logs that are used at this mill, however, there were a number of highly defective logs thrown in to make things interesting.  The "school book" volumes for the logs was as follows:

Scribner short log board foot

USFS Cubic Log Scale

Gross

Net

Gross

Net

20,800

16,490

3261.8

2730.7

The logs were reviewed one-by-one, with the correct methodology and volume developed and agreed upon for each log. The meticulous review process was necessary as there was much at stake (a prize of $190 for the answer that was closest to the agreed upon log volumes). Many thanks to IFG for providing a superb mill tour, log rollout, lunch and for contributing $100 of prize money the log rollout.
